Southern Railway / Region related model news update – further updated 12/06/2015

Today’s post is an update / catch up on the status of a few Southern Railway / Region related models that are in progress with a number of the Ready to Run manufacturers / commissioners from N to 0 gauge.

Kernow Model Centre

Regular readers of my blog will know that I have been assisting the Kernow Model Centre with their Southern related commissions and I pleased to be able to report progress on a number of fronts.

Livery sample of the Kernwo Models O2 K2105 in SR post war black livery as No. 225
Latest livery sample of the Kernow Models Centre O2 K2105 in SR post war black livery as No. 225

Firstly: livery samples of the mainland version of the Adams O2 have now been received, a number of corrections made and already second livery samples returned in the last week or so. Once all the variations are finally signed off then production can start, along with the Isle of Wight versions that were fully signed off a while ago now. Further information on the Kernow model Centre O2’s can be found here.

ex LSWR Gate Stock parts hot off of the injection moulding machines, can you guess what each part is?

Secondly: It had been kept reasonably quiet, that the although the CADs for the ex LSWR Gate Stock Pull Push sets were previously signed off, tooling has actually commenced and The Kernow Model Centre have now received photographs of the first off components from the tooling. These now require assembly and shipping to the UK for inspection. Further information on the Kernow Model Centre ex LSWR Gate Stock can be found here.

Lastly for now: I can also advise that work is also progressing in the background with updates and corrections to the CADs for the ex LSWR Dia 1541 10T road vans, first announced last September. So watch this space for further news.

Bachmann

The Bachmann livery sample for the SR PLV

The first livery samples for the Bachmann  four wheel luggage vans PLV/PMV and CCT’s first announced in March 2012  have now been received and all can be seen here on the Bachmann website. They are producing the following:
39-525 Southern PLV Passenger Luggage Van Southern Railway Green
39-526 Ex-Southern PMV Parcels & Miscellaneous Van BR Crimson
39-527 Ex-Southern PMV Parcels & Miscellaneous Van BR Green
39-528 Ex-Southern CCT Covered Carriage Truck BR Blue – Weathered

Graham Farish

The first of the original Merchant Navy Pacific models that I reviewed in my post here have now actually started to appear with the retailers.

Graham Farish N Class No. 31844

The N Class Mogul 2-6-0 first announced in March 2013 is now on its way,  with the review samples having been received by the model media so they should start to appear with retailers during July and August. Just like the Merchant Navy, I can vouch for the fact that it is an impressive looking model, especially for its size, and continues the increase in levels of detail for N Gauge Ready to Run models. A video of these models, but sadly not actually running, can be viewed on their website here.
The following four initial variations are being produced:
372-930 No. 868 in SR Olive Green
372-931 No. 31844 in BR Black Early Emblem
372-932 No. 31811 in BR Black Late Crest
372-933 No. 810 in SECR Grey

The livery samples for the Bogie Van B model have been signed off and the expected delivery of the of these models is currently due the end of August / September.

Dapol

Dapol cad of the 4mm ex LSWR style lattice post working signal

Dapol have via their Facebook page here (you do not have to be a member to access the page) Dapol have released CAD images of  the planned 4mm working signals in both SR Rail built and also ex LSWR  lattice post styles. [Edit:] Dapol have also advised 2mm version of these signals are planned.

At the start of last month they also announced a delay to the O Gauge Terrier due to the the level of electromagnetic emissions. A slight modification is now required to the production which will result in delay in the shipment of the initial SR green and LBSC versions towards the end of July, however the BR and Bodiam variants are now due to be delivered three to four weeks later.

I have also been informed that the CAD work on the first variants of  the N Gauge Schools class first announced in July 2012 have been completed, I had already provided some corrections and information to Dapol for these a while back so it is good to hear that they are progressing, but no news as yet when tooling might actually commence.

[Edit:] I have also been reminded that BR green liveried versions of the N gauge Maunsell coaches are due out next month and that Dapol have also now committed to bringing out a brake composite and four compartment brake third by Quarter 4 2015 and these are currently at CAD/CAM stage. This will make possible several prototypical set formations.

Hornby

[Further Edit 12/06/15] Hornby have today released a video via their Engine Shed blog post here from their development team that shows the first running sample of the Adams Radial. Keen eyes should also check out the coaches that the sample is hauling as I think the cat might have been let out of the bag on some other appropriate items  they have planned for release in 2016, that I was previously made aware of, but I wont say anymore until more formal information is released…so watch this space…

Kernow Model Centre exclusive models update

The Kernow Model Centre have today made the following announcement about their exclusive models and commissions and I post it below in full.

In our determination to provide high-quality detailed models we are constantly reviewing progress of our projects. Sometimes this can reveal that changes need to be made, most of which are invisible to our customers.

After careful consideration we have decided to manage the production of our Adams O2 and LSWR Gate Stock OO Gauge models directly with the factory in China, this being the same factory that built our award-winning OO Gauge Beattie Well Tank. We have asked Dave Jones of DJModels to oversee these projects which will continue the close working relationship we have had since we started commissioning exclusive models.

Work on the OO Gauge Tiger Clay Wagons, Bulleid Diesel locos and D6xx Warships also continues as well as other yet-to-be announced projects, all of which will be produced under a new commercial agreement of which details will be given in due course.

All existing orders for these products will be held and there is no need for customers to contact us about this change unless they have changed their phone number, email address or house address and not previously advised us.

A consequence of this decision is that Dapol no longer feel able to progress the O Gauge Beattie Well Tank project and associated clay wagons. We had been working with Dapol to find alternative ways of producing this model, but the pre-orders have been disappointingly low with fewer than 200 orders placed. This is despite a huge discount being offered to encourage and reward customers who placed a pre-order and it being made clear that the pre-order could be cancelled at any time. While we may look at this again in the future for the time being we are going to concentrate on our core OO gauge market. We have already emailed and written to all customers who still held a pre-order for the O Gauge models with details of a special offer to reward their loyalty and patience.

Even after the above changes we had around £275k of special projects remaining with Dapol and it was our intention to continue with these, but Dapol have cancelled all of these with the exception of the OO Gauge models of D1003V Western Ruler and B850ZA and B850ZB Weathered Silver Bullets which are already in production. Our exclusive Class 73s, Bubble Cars, Turbots and Class 22s have all been cancelled and we are obviously very sorry and disappointed that Dapol have chosen to do this. This unexpected act means that we have had to remove these models from our website and have not yet had chance to contact everybody who placed pre-orders but will do so as soon as possible.

We thank all our customers for their patience and understanding for bearing with us and with our new agreement in place we expect rapid progress to be made on the Gate Stock and O2 models and look forward to sharing positive news about these very soon.

Regular updates are available by subscribing to our weekly email newsletter at http://www.kernowmodelrailcentre.com

I will not make any personal comment on the above other to state that I continue to assist Chris Terise at the Kernow Model Centre with respect to their Southern related models.

Kernow Model Centre – Beattie Well Tank goes large

The Kernow Model Centre have today announced:

We have commissioned Dapol to produce on our behalf the LSWR (SR) Beattie Well Tank 2-4-0WT in 7mm Scale O gauge.

Associated for many years with the Wenfordbridge branch while based at Wadebridge these models were commissioned in response to customer demand for the model to be produced in the senior scale following the award-winning model produced in OO gauge last year. This model was initially designed using the very accurate ‘Laser’ scanning technology with the original scan taking place at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre in 2009. With the research already completed this model is off to a flying start and we hope the O gauge model will be released around the end of 2013 or early 2014. The tooling for this model will be owned by Kernow Model Rail Centre.

The price of the Well Tank in O Gauge will be £299.99. You can save a massive £100 by paying a deposit of £100.00 immediately and the remaining £99.99 will be charged when the models are ready to be sent, making the total just £199.99. Paying this deposit does not commit you to buy and you are free at any time to cancel your order and receive a refund of this deposit in full. There are a limited number of this launch offer available and it may be withdrawn at any time without prior notice.

If you would prefer not to pay a deposit you can still place a pre-order without paying anything until the model arrives. If you chose this option you will still save £50 as the price will be reduced to £249.99. This offer will be withdrawn as soon as we receive the model after which all new purchases will be at the full £299.99.
These models will be sent post free to UK addresses.

We will be producing two models:

K7051 Dapol Well Tank number 30587 in BR Black with early emblem

K7052 Dapol Well Tank number 30587 in BR Black with late crest

In addition we are pleased to announce that we have commissioned Dapol to produce two exclusive 7mm scale O Gauge wagon models.

The China Clay 5 Plank Open Wagon

This will be produced with four alternative running numbers and a weathered finish. This will be a newly tooled model with the tooling exclusive to Kernow Model Rail Centre. The price will be £59.99 and we expect the models to arrive towards the end of 2013. These models will be sent post free to UK addresses.

K7001 Dapol 5 Plank Clay Wagon BR weathered as B743171

K7002 Dapol 5 Plank Clay Wagon BR weathered as B743353

K7003 Dapol 5 Plank Clay Wagon BR weathered as B743306

K7004 Dapol 5 Plank Clay Wagon BR weathered as B743198

7 Plank Open Wagon number 30 in Helston Gas Company livery.

The Helston Gas Company operated a fleet of 5 wagons, numbered 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 to give the impression of a much larger fleet!
We expect this model to arrive in the 1st Quarter of 2013 and the price will be £49.99. This model will be sent post free to UK addresses.

K7071 Dapol 7 Plank Open Wagon number 30 – Helston Gas Co

We have set up a dedicated web page to our exclusive O Gauge models – http://www.kernowmodelrailcentre.com/page/70/beattie

With this years announcements by Dapol of an 0 Gauge A1X ‘Terrier’ and also SR 25T ‘Pillbox’ brake vans it seems an interesting time for Southern 7mm modellers.

Dapol announce new models for 2012/13 – Plenty of SR related items…

Dapol have today made their long awaited announcement of their 2012/13 range. Included within their new catalogue are a number of Southern Related items in predominantly N gauge but also a few items in 00 and 0 gauges and I am pleased to be able to detail the Southern Railway / Region related items below.

N Gauge Items

Following from previous announcements last October regarding the planned release of Bulleid Rebuilt Merchant Navy and Light Pacifics (see end of post), Southern Railway / Region modellers continue to be well catered for with a further number of new locomotives:

‘Schools’ V class 4-4-0′
Currently in the final cad/cam stage, this model features everything you would expect from a Dapol steam locomotive, including ‘super creep’ motor, DCC ready, traction tyres and a wealth of detail.
The initial releases planned (in both DCC read and DDC fitted options) are:
30926 ‘REPTON’ BR LINED GREEN LATE TENDER LOGO
905 ‘TONBRIDGE’ MALACHITE LINED GREEN ‘SOUTHERN’
30921 ‘SHREWSBURY’ BR LINED BLACK SMALL EARLY LOGO
929 ‘MALVERN’ MALACHITE GREEN

Class 33/0 and 33/1
Building on the sucess of their class 26 and 27 it was logical that the Southern Region’s Class 33 would follow.
The Initial release will be the class 33/1 ‘bagpipe’ loco with the class 33/0 following on a month after, during the 2012/2013 catalogue life span, although they are both in the tool room currently.

Class 33/0

Featuring Dapol’s established award winning heavy split frame tungsten chassis and super creep motor it will also feature a lit headcode panel in the direction of travel.
The initial releases planned (in both DCC read and DDC fitted options) are:

Class 33/1, will be the first released to be followed by the 33/0

33/0 33030 BR BLUE
33/0 D6571 BR GREEN NO YELLOW WARNING PANEL
33/0 33046 ‘MERLIN’ ENGINEERS GREY/YELLOW ‘DUTCH’
33/0 D6597 BR GREEN SMALL YELLOW WARNING PANEL
33/1 33102 BR BLUE
33/1 33103 ENGINEERS GREY/YELLOW ‘DUTCH’

Class 50
The Class 50 often seen on the Southern Region west of England line is also released in a number of versions although the early versions would not have been seen on SR lines in that condition.
D406 BR BLUE (UNREFURBISHED)
50043 BR BLUE (UNREFURBISHED)
50040 BR LARGE LOGO BLUE ‘LEVIATHAN’
50037 ORIGINAL NSE ‘ILLUSTRIOUS’

Other new locomotives include a range of GWR Pannier Tanks, the Class 22 and the General Motors Class 59.

Rolling Stock

A range of Maunsell coaches are confirmed, these had already been hinted at on Dapol’s own Facebook page some time ago. These will be ready for the fitting of the Dapol lighting bar and also their working gangway connectors.

Maunsell 6 Compartment Brake 3rd

They do not appear to have formally listed what is being released but from the images files it looks like the following:

– Six Compartment Brake 3rd,
– Corridor Composite,
– Corridor All first,
– Corridor Compartment 3rd (to be confirmed)

Maunsell Composite

As this appears to be very similar to Hornby’s original releases ( I will not speculate on why) lets hope that they allow for the fact that the SR used set formations and release enough Brake 3rds to allow correct formations to be made.

Utility Van, SR Van U (BR CCT)

These I am sure will popular and great news to accompany the previous announcement by Bachmann of their planned release of Bulleid coaches.

A CCT utility van (Van U as per SR designation) is also announced, to be released in SR green, BR Maroon (sic, perhaps this should be crimson?), BR Blue and BR Engineers red.

The SR Van B, not listed as a release but included in the CAD drawings.

However within the CAD images supplied is also an image of a Van C (BY in BR parlance) as well but this has not been listed as a separate to be release item. I will endeavour to seek clarification on this in due course and post accordingly on here.

00 Gauge Items

First laser scan of Class 73

Development still continues on previously announced 00 items such as the Class 73 as announced here and class 22 headcode disc version. They have also announced a GWR streamlined railcars which I am sure will popular of modellers of that other railway!

Signals – 2mm, 4mm and now 7mm
Further to the recent introduction of working GWR and LMS style semaphore signals in 2mm and 4mm scales the range will be expanded to include Southern Rail Post built (Ladder types as described by Dapol) and Lattice type along with bracket options. These will also be released in due in 7mm scale as well.

0 Gauge

Dapol announced at Warley last year their entry into the 7mm market with a number of private owner wagons and the Class 08 shunter. Thus year will see two Southern related items added to range:

‘Terrier’ A1x class 0-6-0′
Featuring full cab detail, their OO motor connected to a flywheel with DCC compatibility, darkened profile wheels (to Gauge 0 Guild standards) and a heavy chassis. Like many new models this will be the result of laser scanning one of the numerous examples preserved.

The initial releases planned are:
32640 BR Black (Early Crest)
32646 BR Black (Late Crest)
W8 Southern Green ‘Freshwater’
55 Stroudley Green ‘Stepney’

‘Pill Box’ Southern Brake Van
Dapol have tooled this model to include left or right duckets, and correctly depicted brake gear, handles and chassis plates etc. It is also fitted with a working tail lamp!
SR BRAKE VAN ‘pillbox’ DS56400 Olive Green
SR BRAKE VAN 55965 ‘SR’ Brown / Vermillion red
SR BRAKE VAN DS55148 Engineers red
SR BRAKE VAN DS55597 dark grey with yellow warning panels.

Edit 21/07/12: Following communication with Dapol they have confirmed that the brake van SR livery would be brown not grey as originally stated within their press release and also that they plan a number of variants including  left and right duckets, 2 or 3 end windows, working tail lamp (where possible), air tanks where needed, axle box raised lettering etc.

A further announced 7mm release is that of an LMS pattern 6 Wheel milk tank

Previously announced Items

I also have CAD images of the previously announced Bulleid original and rebuilt Light Pacifics that I will post later in the week.
