Putting perspective into the hobby @HWDMRS #Wyrail exhibition

A bit of a plug… with the enthusiasm for the hobby once again getting a boost from The Great Model Railway Challenge on prime time Channel 5 TV, The High Wycombe and District MRS organisers of  WYCRAIL is delighted that one of last year’s competition layouts attending is ‘Ealing Road’, this was built by the Missenden Modellers team, the theme of their heat was ‘Movies’ and the team opted to base theirs on a medley of the Ealing Studios films of the early fifties, regarded by many as the high point in British Cinema. One of the highlights and impressive features of ‘Ealing Road’ is use of forced perspective both within the models on the layout itself and within the effective backscene.

The Society itself also has had a new perspective this year having moved into new bright and air-conditioned clubrooms right in the centre of town, overlooking High Wycombe railway station, so we can further develop modelling within the society whilst watching 1:1 scale Chiltern Line trains pass by!

This year’s WYCRAIL ’19 exhibition will once again take place at The Cressex Community School, Holmers Lane, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. HP12 4UD tomorrow Saturday 2nd November.

With 29 high quality and inspirational model railway layouts, as ever WYCRAIL ‘19 is firmly established as being one of the largest and best supported one day model railway exhibitions in the South East of England. This impressive layout line-up will include British, North American and Continental outline and in a wide range of scales and gauges including Z, 2mm, N, 00, H0, EM, S, 0, G and narrow gauges.

Layout highlights in addition to ‘Ealing Road’ include: Haversham Central (N), Kyle of Lochaish (2mm FS), Whitmoor (N), Staffordshire Pottery (N) Ilfracombe East (009), Lake Bank (3mm), Lynth-Haven (00), Daisyfield Traincare (00), Thornfield (00), Trinity Dock Street Bridge (00), Upper Oreful Street (00 Trams), Burton Bradstock (EM),Trowland (S), Belbroughton (0), Bristol Goods Shed (7mm FS), Vale View (0), Whiteleaf Railway (G), Sanhei Valley (Z Japanese), Salinas Valley (H0, North American), Kidmore Fork (H0 North American) Sevanda (H0 Norwegian)

Once again, our own Society’s junior section layout ‘Mothercombe’ (00) will be on display showing its continued excellent progress and confirming the perspective that the hobby is alive and well with our younger members!

Full trade support will be present ranging from tools, kits, electronic components to R-T-R models and books.

Opening times are between 10am and 5pm.

Admisson price is only £7 per person (no concessions) with any accompanied under 16 year old entering FREE!

The venue is conveniently close to the M40 Junction 4 and the free vintage bus service will once again be operated between Wycombe Railway Station (Chiltern Line) and Wycombe Town Centre to the Cressex Community School and via the new large Park and Ride free car park at the Handy Cross Hub. Due to road works in Cressex Road at the entrance to the venue using the park and and ‘vintage bus’ ride would make all visitors life easier. The timetable for the bus service can be found here.

Further information and details can be found on the Societies website at http://www.hwdmrs.org.uk

We look forward to seeing you at the show, a further date for the diary is a couple of weeks on Saturday 16th November when the Society is having an open day at its Club Rooms and my own Canute Road Quay layout will be in attendance, contact me for here more information.

From the Archive #3 Making an exhibition of myself or Fisherton Sarum’s first outing, 10 years on…

November this year sees the 10th anniversary since the first exhibition outing for Fisherton Sarum. Wycrail 2006, the annual exhibition of the High Wycombe and District Model Railway Society, was the first public appearance, and was the first time the layout was actually fully operated.  I was however able to set the layout up for the very first time at the Society’s clubrooms the week before and some very last minute corrections to wiring etc. (thanks again Mark!) ensured that on the day itself things went pretty much to plan.

Fisherton Sarum’s first exhibition appearance at Wycrail 2006 with yours truly, my Dad, Daniel and Simon at the helm looking a tad younger!

Getting a new layout on the exhibition circuit for the first time can sometimes be tricky owing the chicken and egg conundrum that to get exhibition invites you often need to be already seen on the exhibition circuit. Being a member of a Model Railway Society or Club is often a way, as in my case, of getting an invite to the Society’s own Wycrail show and therefore that first public appearance.

Visitors to Wycrail view Fisherton Sarum, the fiddle yard always gets a sneaky look too…

I have always been indebted to members of the HWDMRS and my own family for assisting with the exhibiting of Fisherton Sarum and its first outing was no exception although Simon and Daniel, now somewhat grown up working for Network Rail and being at University respectively, probably wont thank me for showing them here in their younger days…

In the ten years since that first outing I have enjoyed exhibiting across the country, at now nearly 30 shows, ranging from Wadebridge in the South West, Manchester, Hartlepool, Doncaster in the North, The Warley NEC show, Tonbridge and Worthing in the South and of course on Salisbury station itself.

Since its first few outings many things have changed, developed and been added to the layout, usually as a result of the operating team making suggestions over a pint or two, such as:

Another view of the layout at Wycail 2006, I wonder where the young onlooker is now?

Fisherton Sarum returned to Wycrail in 2014 and will also be making an appearance at the High Wycombe and District Model Railways Society’s open day on Saturday 21st May 2016 see here for more details. I will continue to exhibit Fisherton Sarum, as it has always been enjoyable, but have always limited its appearances to approximately 3 shows a year and the current small number of booked appearances can be found here, although a couple more are in discussion so watch this space.

Wycrail Exhibition this Saturday – 7th November – High Wycombe @hwdmrs

I make no apologies for this blatant plug, but as I am long time member, and indeed past Chairman and now Publicity Officer, of the High Wycombe and District Model Railway Society it would be wrong of me not to promote this year’s WYCRAIL ’15 exhibition that takes place this coming Saturday, November 7th

Once again it is being held at the excellent venue of The Cressex Community School, Holmers Lane, High Wycombe, Bucks HP12 4UD

Fisherton Sarum at the Peterborough National Festival of Railway Modeling this weekend

Fisherton Sarum will be making its penultimate appearance of the year this weekend, the 18th and 19th of October, at thePeterborough National Festival of Railway Modeling  at the East of England Showground near Peterborough. This show is organised by Warners publications the group behind the British Railway Modelling Magazine.

Fisherton Sarum will be stand 126 in the centre of the main hall. There will at least 30 layouts at the show, along with the usual mix of traders and the BRM Village with a mix of layouts, demonstrators and a chance to meet the team behind the magazine.

In addition to exhibiting Fisherton Sarum I shall also be involved, both days of the show,  in a Question and Answer session each day in the Model Railways Live theatre discussing the background to Fisherton Sarum, a passion for all things Southern Railway and also my involvement assisting a number of the model manufacturers, such as the Kernow Model Rail Centre, with their Southern Railway related models.

I hope to see you there, please come and say hello. If you unable to attend this weekend then perhaps you might be able to get along to see Fisherton Sarum at the Wycrail ’14 show, the annual show of my own local model railway society the High Wycombe and District MRS.   being held on The 1st of November. Full details can be found on the dedicated Wycrail website here.

Fisherton Sarum on tour this Autumn

There are two more chances to see Fisherton Sarum in operation at exhibitions this year, I have timed this post to act a reminder and hopefully give you a chance to include them in your diary. As regular readers of this blog will know I only usually exhibit the layout at three or four shows each year. I am as ever indebted to my parents and fellow members of the High Wycombe and District Model Railway Society for their time and assistance at these shows to enable Fisherton Sarum to be exhibited at all.

The first of the two shows coming up is the Peterborough National Festival of Railway Modeling being held on the 18th and 19th of October, at the East of England Showground near Peterborough.

In addition to exhibiting Fisherton Sarum I shall also be involved in a Question and Answer session each day in the Model Railways Live theatre discussing the background to Fisherton Sarum, a passion for all things Southern Railway and also my involvement assisting a number of the model manufacturers, such as the Kernow Model Rail Centre, with their Southern Railway related models.

The 1st of November sees
Fisherton Sarum being exhibited a little closer to home at Wycrail ’14 the annual show of my own local model railway society the High Wycombe and District MRS.
Wycrail has established itself as one of the best one day shows in the South of England, (as said by others not just my own possibly biased opinion!)  and this year maintains the standard with 28 high quality layouts attending  along with a good mix of traders and demonstrators.  Full details can be found on the dedicated Wycrail website here.
It is held in the excellent large,  bright and modern Cressex Community School, located in Cressex Road, High Wycombe, HP12 4UD. A free bus service is also provided between High Wycombe Station on the Chiltern Line, Wycombe town centre and the exhibition venue.
This will be Fisherton Sarum’s second appearance at Wycrail as it made its public debut at the 2006 exhibition.

I sincerely hope you get a chance to visit at least one or other of the shows and please make sure you come and say hello, as it is always a pleasure to meet new friends made via this blog.

Fisherton Sarum returns to Wycrail at this years show in November

The first public appearance of Fisherton Sarum was at the 2006 Wycrail exhibition organised by the High Wycombe and District Model Railway Society. of which I have been a member for, gulp, over 30 years! This November, Saturday 1st, will see Fisherton Sarum once again return to the Wycrail exhibition, albeit in its bright new and spacious venue at the Cressex Community School.

Bullied power at Fisherton Sarum.

At this years Wycrail show Fisherton Sarum will be be in good company along with 26 other quality layouts in a wide variety of scales and gauges, including: Diesels in the Duchy (EM), Tucking Mill (2mm fs), Fourgig East (0)  and Propect Valley (H0).  As usual there will be also be a wide range of trade support.

The full details of the show can be found on the Wycrial website here, the key details however are that it is being held on Saturday 1st November, so add it to your diary now, at Cressex Community School, Cressex Road, High Wycombe, HP12 4UD. It is open to the public between 10.00 and 17.00. The show is well worth a visit and is generally accepted as being one of the best one day shows in the south of England.

Once again Spalding exhibition and once again St Stephen’s Road

As is usual for this time of year it is a busy period for model railway exhibitions. Following hot on the heals of the successful High Wycombe & District MRS Wycrail exhibition last Saturday, this coming weekend sees the annual Spalding Model Railway Club exhibition.

This show,  as been the norm in recent years, features a showcase area of layouts that have appeared within the pages of Hornby Magazine and I shall once again assisting Hornby Magazine Editor Mike Wild operate his St Stephen’s Road layout, that we last exhibited back in September at the Swindon Railway Festival at the Steam museum.

As I have posted before St Stephens Road is based on a fictitious location in North Cornwall nominally just north of Launceston where a Southern branch meets the Western Region with the station having a dedicated platform face for the Southern line. A junction and combined goods yard allows for workings between the two regions such as freight including china clay trains. The layout is now DCC controlled and features sound fitted locomotives, including a couple of Bulleid light pacifics complete with smoke units.
I course try and spend most of my time operating the Southern Region side of the layout!

If you are attending the show and say hello as it is always nice to meet those of you whom take the time to read my ramblings in this part of the blogosphere.
