Hi Graham,
What a delightful announcement, I have always held the D15s in high regard and coincidentally have just unearthed a photo of 30464 on a Lymington “Boat Train” for an article on the Lymington branch.
I think your comments about the class are spot-on and would just like to add a note or two, as I believe the design showed that Drummond was quite prepared to admit his errors with the big 4-6-0s and was also prepared to deviate from his standardisation to modernise his designs as he melded the Walschearts valve gear from the Paddleboxes into his traditional 4-4-0 layout to produce a very effective machine. Perhaps if he hadn’t died in that dreadful accident he would have produced a second generation of standard classes and even adopted proper superheating rather than leaving the latter to Urie, who, to complete the story, did actually realise the full potential of the class!
