It’ll be all Wight on the weekend.. heading to Vectis…

Canute Road Quay is on tour regularly throughout this year, this post highlights it’s next outing this coming weekend 11th / 12th May.

I cheated slightly with Canute Road Quay and modelled the quayside but not the water itself so I won’t have any issues carrying water over water when Canute Road Quay heads to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway Model Show – Havenstreet Station, Isle of Wight Steam, Main Rd, Havenstreet, Ryde PO33 4DS this weekend.

Note: The entrance fees shown left (click to enlarge) include a steam train ride ticket, the model railway exhibition and free access to the falconry centre plus flying displays, so all in all a great value full day out, what is not to like!

If you want to only enter for the model railway show a lower amount payable is shown on the IOWSR’s webpage here.

What’s in a name… well the Roman name for the Isle of Wight was of course Vectis.

When the Southern Region, in 1967, electrified the remaining line from Ryde Esplanade to Shanklin they purchased ex London Transport 1923-31 ‘Standard’ Tube stock. Tube stock being used due to potential restrictive clearances in Ryde tunnel. Six four-car sets and six three-car sets were refurbished by BR’s Stewart Lane depot. The four-car sets were know using the Southern style (not this time fixated on toilets or brake type) 4-Vec and 3-Tis after the Roman name (TOPS classes 452 later 485 and 451 later 486 respectively).

If you are able to make the Isle of Wight Steam Railway Model Show Canute Road Quay will be located amongst the rolling stock on display in the ‘Train Story’ building. Come along and say hello.

Details of all of Canute Road Quay’s future exhibition appearances can be found here.

  1. Have a great time on the Island Graham. I know it fairly well having met my first wife (on the mainland at a party) who was from the Island. My first trip down there was in the summer of 1965 followed by many more until we married at Brading Church in 1969. I remember that antique (but wonderful) stock and the O2 tanks.

The story going around Southern House in 1966/7 was that one or two of the section head at the CM&EE SR and some mates at LT had too many drinks one night and did a few calculations on a fag packet and that was the basis of the IOW electrification.
Looking back, the retention of a dedicated steam railway on the IOW (with some DEMUs) would have been a huge money spinner for the Island but such schemes were perhaps 20 years in the future.

    Kind regards,
