Hornby announce first part of their 2025 00 gauge range and includes Bulleid Tavern Car sets – A round up of new SR/BR(s) items

Hornby have today announced the first part of their forthcoming 00 gauge range for 2025. Hornby have advised that their announcements will focus on items that will be delivered within 12 months, so as last year there is a possibility of  further announcements to come during the year.  There is also likely to be a separate TT-120 update later .
The headline news for Southern Region (and some Eastern Region) modellers is the announcement of the Bulleid Tavern Car coach dining sets. The new SR / BR(s) relevant announced items are detailed below, with their planned release dates in [ ].
Apart from the Bulleid Tavern car sets the only other new tooling for 2025 are GWR Saint 4-6-0s and already announced GNR J13/LNER J52s, however, there are in total 137 new livery items across Railroad range, train sets and packs, steam and diesel locomotives, carriages and wagons announced.

New BR Southern  Region Bulleid Tavern Cars

Eight pairs of Tavern cars were built at Eastleigh between April and June 1949. They took the form of a Diagram 2663 kitchen/buffet car paired with a Diagram 2664 composite diner. They followed the form Bulleid introduced on the ‘Bognor’ buffets with windowless dining cars to improve customer turnover.

The Tavern Car sets initially saw use on the Southern Region with the Atlantic Coast Express and also away from the SR on the Master Cutler, White Rose, Norfolkman, South Yorkshireman and the Liverpool to Harwich Boat trains.

The Diagram 2663 Kitchen and Buttery cars contained an inn style bar / counter area, side seating area, kitchen, pantry and a staff compartment. Fake leaded lights were applied to the top light windows in the bar area the only windows in the public area of the coach. The inside was styled to look like an English Inn with mock beams, paneling and the outside painted with imitation English bond brickwork over the crimson with mock half-timbered beams on the cream.
The name of each Tavern was displayed using vitreous enamel panels on a duck egg blue background affixed to each side of the vehicle.

The coaches were officially described as Kitchen & Buttery cars but soon became known as ‘Tavern Cars’. Although they lost the external brickwork and beam paintwork from the crimson lake and cream livery and were painted in BR(s) Green from 1957 they retained their inn signs until being rebuilt from June 1959.

The Diagram 2664 Composite diner sat 24 First and 40 Third class passengers in two saloons. The third class seating was arranged in the standard 2 + 2 loose chair layout the first class diners faced each other with their backs against the sides of the coach. This was convenient for the stewards but did not afford the diners much privacy. The first class saloon only had three sets of top lights on each side whilst the third class had four sets on each side. The windowless composite diners were rebuilt from June 1950 onwards.

Due to customer complaints, especially the patrons of the ‘Master Cutler’ the six pairs had returned to the SR by October / December 1949. The Diagram 2664 Composite dining cars were then rebuilt from June 1950 as Diagram 2665 Composite dining saloons, with the fitting of nine standard large windows and standard transverse 2 +1 seating 18 First and 36 Third Class. They remained paired with the Diagram 2663 Kitchen and Buttery cars until the later were also rebuilt from June 1959 into more orthodox Kitchen/Buffet cars that became Diagram 2668. The kitchen and buttery cars  gained seven standard large windows on the corridor side and two standard large windows on the non corridor side of the saloon area. The saloon area gained 2 + 1 seating for 11 persons.

They remained in service until withdrawal between 1965 and 1968, with four of sets lasting until just a months before the total demise of Bulleid loco hauled stock on the Southern Region.

The two twin packs being initially released, RRP 139.99 and due December 2025, are as follows:

18 thoughts on “Hornby announce first part of their 2025 00 gauge range and includes Bulleid Tavern Car sets – A round up of new SR/BR(s) items

  1. Wow! Tavern sets! I’m delighted but really surprised – is this foreshadowing a Hornby push into hauled Bulleid coaches?

      1. Brake vans S1S to S3S were running as ordinary vans for a number of years when they were withdrawn from Night Ferry service. A model of this type would be most welcome, with general appeal.

  2. Graham,

Some most welcomed announcments from Hornby – the Tavern cars in particular!

    Thank you!

As an aside I cannot located any records shewing 3 Cor set 222 in CLC livery – it appears to have been outshopped Malachite 11th December 1947 thence to BR(S) Green 17th July 1958.

  3. Second thought – is the (welcome) reissue of the Maunsell hauled stock in CLC presaging a further round of reissued Maunsells in BR(S) Green? I’m still a bit mystified about why Hornby haven’t released all of their (excellent) Maunsell catering vehicles in BR(S) Green which I would have thought would have been the most popular livery (or at least more popular than CLC)?

    1. Likewise, we have yet to have a Maunsell Droplight open third in malachite, nor the Maunsell Restaurant Cars/Dining Saloon pairs in their as-built form in olive green with full lining, or as rebuilt in 1947 in malachite.

  4. Great, Tavern 2 car sets. and in two iterations. A bit of a surprise as Bachmann are doing Bulleid passenger stock; I am hoping that they match each other which with todays manufacturing standards should be achievable.
Re issues of T9 especially with 8 wheeled tender most welcome and a S15 SR, and a Merchant Navy which,, in my opinion, Hornby have not fully exploited ie BR 001 to 010 versions.
I have not been able to find which Tavern sets were allocated away from the Southern Region.

  5. An observation in respect of 4 VEP no.7712, is it know if Hornby will modelling this unit with its underframe lifting lugs (these are low down near each end of the car and projected up into the lower bodysides)?

Lest it be of interest, no.7712 entered service with yellow warning panels, receiving full yellow ends 13th November 1969 and Blue /Grey 25th April 1972.

      1. Graham, thank you and I too suspect not.
Upon reflection seem to recall Simon K decided against modelling the early batches of 4 VEP because of the prominent lifting lugs (pity as it would have allowed the 4 VEG units) – Colin

  6. The tavern cars are indeed welcome. As for the economics for Hornby of producing more Maunsells I have my doubts. The existing models are frequently heavily discounted, especially the restaurant cars, by the box shifters. I have quite a collection myself which I am unfortunately having to thin due to a house move and EBay prices are depressed.
The new liveries for some of the older Southern loco models look good and I am sure will be welcomed by a number of folk like ourselves. But again I have my doubts about the profitability. I would like to be proved wrong.

  7. On the Hornby Live Stream, Hornby confirmed that they will be producing the later RKB (Dia 2668) for the Taverns – which I will be happy to wait for!

  8. Graham,

Kitchen & Buttery Cars! … I can see straight away why that description never caught on. Tavern Car has a far better ring to it and to be honest is the only description I have ever seen of these vehicles up to now.
Tavern Car and Tiny Window; then All Window trailers are most welcome. Well done Hornby!

    Glenn
