Hornby announce new Merchant Navy 21c9 Shaw Savill as part of WWII VE Day 80th Anniversary Collection

Hornby have today announced a new WWII VE Day 80th Anniversary Collection that will include a model of Merchant Navy 21c9 ‘Shaw Savill’.
The WWII VE Day 80th Anniversary collection also includes LNER Class A4 4-6-2 4469 Sir Ralph Wedgwood, LMS Streamlined Coronation Class 4-6-2 6247 City of Liverpool and LNER Class A3 4-6-2 103 Flying Scotsman.

  • R30455 SR Merchant Navy Class 4-6-2 21C9 ‘Shaw Savill’ WWII 80th Anniversary Collection. The model depicts 21c9 in SR Black with ‘widow’s peak’ front end as running between introduction on 25th June 1942 and 2nd June 1943. She was allocated to Salisbury shed at this time. Due November 2025. Note: It is my understanding that Hornby have not yet tooled for a Series One Merchant Navy in their later condition with standard hood and deflectors front end (hence my forward dating of 21c7 that can be read here)

Hornby have also announced a number of LNER A4 models in their ‘Hornby Dublo’ die cast body range marking the 90th anniversary of the LNER A4s, all will be in silver livery and includes Silver Link, Quick Silver, Silver King and Silver Fox  (there is of course a Bulleid connection as he worked on the A4 front end whilst working for Gresley on the LNER). Model due September 2025.

These models are available from Kernow Model Rail Centre here.

  1. Thanks for the update, but I’m afraid I really don’t understand this choice:
Why for the 80th anniversary of VE day, do a locomotive in its 42-43 condition?
Especially as this is the same short lived front end with widow peak etc, they released Aberdeen Commonwealth in, in the same wartime black livery.
Why not release it in its 1945 condition?

      1. Another missed opportunity. It’s not as though this anniversary comes as a surprise, is it ?
