Hornby announce full 2016 range and the addition of a SR cattle trucks Dias 1529/30 further updated 28/04/16

As has been evident over the last 12 months Hornby have changed the way in which they are announcing new produces to market, moving away from a single announcement around Christmas time, and have already made headline announcements of some of the new models for 2016 during the year. These from a Southern Railway perspective had included Bullied Merchant Navy Pacifics in original air smoothed form (February 2015) and ex LSWR 58ft non corridor coaching stock (June 2015). Hornby have today (26/11) just prior to this weekends Warley National Model Railway exhibition announced here the full details of their entire 2016 which has included a number of previously unannounced items including a SR diagrams 1529 and 1530 cattle trucks from new tooling, the latter being the Bulleid version with plywood ends [Edit 07/01/16. Hornby have now further clarified and confirmed these releases as being two different running numbers in SR livery for the Dia 1530 style and the Dia 1529 style will be two different running in BR livery, with the liveries reversed for 2017]&nbsp The aim of this post is to round up the announcements that are of a Southern Railway / Southern Region interest, although some details are still to be confirmed and I will update this post once further information becomes available. Also two new models will be further announced at 1.30pm direct from the Warley National Model Railway exhibition this Saturday.

  1. Falling over to announce it all fast, Hornby again falls over its own shoelaces?
R6770 Carless Petrol tank, carelessly mis-spelt.
Images of R3462 / R3463 late/ early BR but the same pic.
    R4738 Pullman first class, name of . . . . .
R4718/9 ex-LSWR coaches – do the images match the descriptions?
No, I’ve not looked at the rest,
but I suggest it’s poor practice to make even these simple mistakes.
Then there are the references without the images.

Somebody should have a quiet word; they ignore my observations . . .

  2. Hi Graham
West Country Camelford (streamlined) should be on the list, I expect you were surprised like everyone else with the announcement. Great news about the cattle wagon and the reliveries on the locos. I guess the Maunsell coaches will be SR olive high window as they have only appeared in sets previously. All most welcome as are the 58′ coaches.
Nudge nudge – Really would like a King Arthur in SR livery with the water cart tender.

  3. The Hornby web site describes the cattle wagon as Maunsell in two cases and Bulleid in two cases; perhaps this indicates they are providing both variants, planked and non-planked ends.

  4. Very many thanks for this round-up, Graham.
The nit-pickers will always find nits to pick, and the moaners moan, of course, but I think Hornby’s 2016 range as announced so far is pretty good.
My greatest wish is that the company will actually be able to deliver on time.

  5. Thank you for the post and the updates Graham. Glad to see that Hornby is supporting the Southern Enthusiast, just a little disappointed that there’s no early emblem 415, or a blue Merchant Navy. Also hoped that we’d get the rebuilt coaches in BR Crimson, still hopefully we’ll see these in the future

    1. Peter, Although the BR blue livery is not included in the list for 2016 I am sure it will make an appearance in the future. Hornby have designed the tooling to be able over time to produce all 30 locomotives so there is plenty of scope for liveries.

  6. It will be interesting to see what livery Hornby announces for the two original Merchant Navies. Matt Malachite for Channel Packet would seem likely, and I’m hoping for Bulleid wartime black for Royal Mail. It would also be nice to see a Urie King Arthur, or S15 for that matter, with narrow stove pipe chimney in LSWR livery at some point…. which shouldn’t require too much effort on Hornby’s part.

    1. David

The initial release of 21c1 and 3 will be in Malachite, but as I have said in another reply earlier Hornby have designed the tooling to be able over time to produce all 30 locomotives so there is plenty of scope for liveries.

  7. Personally, I would prefer the BR versions of the Maunsell rebuilt coaches be left in Hornby’s BR green. Makes them easier to scratch off the S before the number and have them run as over varnished SR malachite. Doing them in BR crimson makes them useless for my purposes. I know this goes counter to the desires of those who wish to run them with their Adams radial tank in the 1950’s. But then I model Padstow not Seaton.

  8. Glad to hear Graham that you’re working on getting the 58ft stock in Crimson, I had better start saving my pennies!

  9. R4737 Maunsell third brake appears on Hornby’s list away from the other Maunsell olive coaches so a full set of 2 third brakes are available for the first and third.

  10. Hornby have added images to their on line 2016 listing. The SR Maunsell coaches are in the Bulleid era livery which would match the SR Merchant Navys. The SR van is the established 2+2 planked model but with large (incorrect) SR markings. (Lets hope this error is not perpetuated on the later design cattle truck).
The Railroad SR coaches appear to be a modified Maunsell without inset brake compartments, perhaps a rebirth of some prehistoric mould?
Again, thank for all your good work Graham,
    regards
    Robert inns

  11. Hi Graham,

    Do you know if:

R4734 – SR Maunsell Corridor First Class Coach – SR Post War Green [Edit 29/11/15] High window style
R4735 – SR Maunsell Corridor Third Class Coach – SR Post War Green [Edit 29/11/15] High window style
R4736 – SR Maunsell 6 Compartment Third Class Brake Coach – SR Post War Green [Edit 29/11/15] High window style
R4737 – SR Maunsell 6 Compartment Third Class Brake Coach – SR Post War Green [Edit 09/12/15] Added to the list, High window style

Will be the same green as the first run from several years ago?

This appeared to be the same green that Hornby used for their BR Green versions.

Is it correct that the SR Green is the same as BR Green, or should they be different?

What is the relevance of “Post War” Green as opposed to just Malachite green please?

Green is clearly a complicated colour!

    Thank you

    Gary
